THE GLOBAL VILLAGE
Sault Ste Marie
This site was surrounded by complimentary functions such as theCanadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, the Ermatinger – Clergue Heritage site, the Sault Ste. Marie Museum, the Municipal Public Library, the Art Gallery of Algoma, and Clergue Park. The addition of an “International Village” would serve to enhance the area as a “Cultural District”, establishing it as a primary destination point for tourists and local patrons alike, consistent with Sault Ste. Marie’s waterfront development strategy.
Our design is based on the concept of a “village” where local ethnic and international cultural groups are assigned a plot of land within the park to develop an installation which best captures the essence of their culture. Such installations would include pavilions for ongoing exhibitions and activities, symbolic sculptures or monuments, and a variety of other possibilities. All elements would be strategically placed to optimize one’s experience and capture the dynamic quality and beauty of the mosaic of our many cultures.
